Even though bears are carnivores, meat doesn’t make up their main food source. The sanctuary’s menu therefore consists to a large extent of vegetables and fruits. Over the course of one year, one bear is fed around 3300 kilograms of fruits and almost one ton of vegetables, followed by bread and meat. Different kinds of nuts, dog pellets and - yes - honey make up the rest of a bears diet.
The average feeding cost for one bear comes down to around 3500 Euros per year. Multiplied by 19, the preserve faces yearly feeding costs of approximately 66.500 Euros.
Each menue is carefully weighed to make sure every bear gets the right amount of food.
