In order to prevent RWE from further cutting trees, environmental activists occupy several parts of the forest.

As of spring 2017, dozens of tree houses are scattered throughout different settlements inside the forest. Located high up in the canopy, the tree houses can only be accessed via ropes and climbing gear.
