A group of Sudanese men gather around a fire to fight cold winds blowing through the unofficial refugee camp in Calais, France.

A group of Sudanese men gather around a fire to fight cold winds blowing through the unofficial refugee camp in Calais, France.

Fleeing violence in their home country Sudan, many of the men have a long history of stateless existence.
They found temporary refuge in Libya and Egypt until tensions started to destabilize the two countries. A refugee-overcrowded Italy was the next step following a journey of being pushed through different European countries. In proper German, several of the Sudanese refugees explain their dreams of living in Germany. After only a couple of months they managed to speak the language, found friends and connection, but the government ultimately denied their requests for asylum and refused to hand out papers.

Further processed through the bureaucracy of Europe, they are now stuck in northern France hoping to reach the UK in order to find a place to finally settle.
