Nemat (28), Ghazni Afghanistan.
As Taliban threatened him and his family when they found out that his father has been living in Britain in the past, he fled Afghanistan and is longing for a safe life in the UK but has been stuck in Calais since September 2015. In his own words he tried to cross to the UK “more than a hundred times.” One night in November 2015, he tried his luck once more seeking to board a cargo truck going for the port, when a rubber bullet hit his chest. He doesn’t remember much as he passed out upon impact and only woke up in the hospital of Calais, but admits that he did not expect that amount of police brutality. “We are all human, we don’t create problems, we just have problems in Afghanistan”, he says. After two months, Nemat still suffers from the incident as he has had problems with his heart since then, regularly passing unconscious and in need of an inhaler.
